Hello, and welcome to this quick look at Rochester, New Yorks TV stations. Each of these channels originate from Monroe County (most inside the city of rochester itself) and their programming is focused around local issues (such as news reporting).

Why is this page important?

Well, I recently remembered taking a trip out of NY state a year or so ago (to Washington DC no less) and understand the confusion that comes with trying to find local channels on the boobtube. So, this archive is for those who are not furmilliar with Rochester but have to visit it some time. At least you'll have an idea of what is availible as far as local stations are concerned.

Why and how are these stations rated?

This rating is based soly on my personal preference, but may be useful (or useless) in figuring out which channel is best suited for you. Each station is graded based upon over all programming, depth and usefulness in newsreporting, and how in touch with the 'Rochester-Viewer' these aspects are at this point in time. The gradeing scale is the same as it was in school, with A being the highest mark possible.

Why do you review the Personalites and who are they?

To me, the station broadcast personalities (people we see on the tube) are kinda like the 'hello, watch me' statement the station is trying to make. The vast majority of these folks can be found on the station's news programs, but there are occations where local folks have some airtime as well.

The reviews are soly based upon the 'performance' of the personalities on the air and in no way meant as a personal shot at these people (hell, I've never met any of them, so making that kind of call would be based in farce anyway). I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, jut give my own interpretation of their on-air effectiveness.

This really is a side service of our current cable provider, Time-Warner Communications, who bought GRC back in the mid 90's. The news persoanlities mirror that of CNN's Headline News. The only problem arrises with the fact that most of the time these reports are taped and replayed over a 30 minute cycle. The local shows do feature local hosts, but are on to sparadically for those of us who like to schedule our lives.

News team is alot like the 2000 NFL Washington Redskins...a lot of local personality retreds. Even though the station pushes their news people WAY too much (how does a 2-5 minute spot about their 10'oclock news anchors played a dozen times a night sound to you?), the crew is effective as an information provider. Of all the stations, however, this one lacks the local flavor the most. This is probably due to Fox exectutives making all their affiliate stations come off this way, but this station's persoanlities have the look and feel of your doorknob; any which one could do its job.

• People who are in bed by 11pm.
• Viewers who like controversial shows.
• Those who prefer national programming as opposed to local.

Not too many on-air personalities. Only when they want your money, that is (its a PBS station after all).
